Subsequently, sources confirmed to 247sports’ Matt Zenitz that Saban conveyed his choice to Alabama on Wednesday, a confirmation echoed by Saban and the university later that evening.

Expressing his sentiments, Saban remarked in a statement released by the university, “The University of Alabama has held a uniquely significant place in the hearts of Terry and me. Our 17-year tenure as the head coach at Alabama, intertwined with the Tuscaloosa community, has been a source of immense joy. It transcends mere wins and losses; it encapsulates the legacy and the honorable approach we consistently pursued. Our aim was always to enhance the value of players’ futures, fostering their optimal development as athletes and individuals within the program. We hope to have achieved this, and Alabama will forever be our cherished home.”

Alabama Athletic Director Greg Byrne, in a statement, lauded Saban’s unparalleled coaching prowess, stating, “In unequivocal terms, Nick Saban stands as one of the preeminent coaches in the annals of sports, and The University of Alabama has been privileged to have him at the helm of our football program for the past 17 seasons.”

“While his tenure as our coach concludes, his legacy endures perpetually,” Byrne continued. “It has been an honor for us to witness one of the finest coaching careers firsthand. Coach Saban’s legacy is truly extraordinary.”

The curtain fell on the Crimson Tide’s 2023 College Football Playoff journey with a 27-20 overtime defeat to the eventual national champions, the Michigan Wolverines, in the semifinal.

Saban’s septuple national titles establish a record for any college football coach, sharing the Crimson Tide’s historical pinnacle with the legendary Bear Bryant, both boasting six titles.

Alabama President Stuart R. Bell extended gratitude in a statement, declaring, “Words fall short in adequately conveying our gratitude to Coach Saban for his exemplary leadership and service to The University of Alabama over the past 17 years. His unwavering commitment to excellence has set the standard for our program, on the field and in academia. Saban’s coaching journey, spanning the NFL and various college teams, commenced with the 2003 national title at Louisiana State University. After a brief stint with the Miami Dolphins in the NFL, Saban assumed the role of Alabama’s head football coach in 2007, revitalizing a program that had not secured a national title since 1992.

Over his 17-year tenure with the Crimson Tide, Saban sculpted a football powerhouse, claiming national titles in 2009, 2011, 2012, 2015, 2017, and 2020. Accompanying these triumphs were nine SEC titles and the mentorship of four Heisman Trophy winners.

Reflecting on the recent season’s semifinal loss, the 72-year-old coach remarked, “This season stands as one of the most remarkable in Alabama football history, considering the team’s journey, accomplishments, and the SEC Championship victory. I am immensely proud of this group. I wish I could have contributed more as a coach to secure their success, and now all we can do is glean lessons from the setbacks.”

Although Saban’s NFL tenure was brief, his impact endured, evident in Alabama’s three first-round selections in the 2023 NFL draft, including the Tide’s inaugural No. 1 overall pick in the common draft era, Bryce Young. Saban’s coaching acumen shines through with 49 first-round selections, 44 of them at Alabama, a record in the common draft era.

Under Saban’s stewardship, the Crimson Tide made eight College Football Playoff appearances in the 10-season CFP era. In his final season, he guided the Tide from a shaky start to a triumph over then-No. 1 Georgia in the SEC championship game, earning a spot in the College Football Playoff before succumbing to Michigan in overtime at the Rose Bowl.
