Kyrgios, a 27-year-old Australian, had never been past the quarter-finals in 29 previous Grand Slam appearances - and last got that far seven-and-a-half years ago.

Kyrgios, 27, had never even reached a Grand Slam semifinal until last week. He has yet to play in any as Nadal withdrew from the tournament with an abdominal tear on the eve of their match.
