Tokyo Olympics champion Neeraj Chopra qualified for the javelin throw final at the World Athletics Championships 2023 in Budapest, Hungary on Friday. Chopra threw 88.39m in his first attempt to qualify for the final, which will be held on Sunday.
Chopra was placed in Group A of the qualification round, along with 19 other javelin throwers. He started the competition with a throw of 88.39m, which was enough to secure his place in the final. His other two throws were 87.48m and 84.80m.
Chopra is the only Indian athlete to have qualified for the final of the men's javelin throw at the World Athletics Championships. He is also the reigning Olympic champion in the event.
In the qualification round, Chopra was the second-best performer. Anderson Peters of Grenada threw 89.12m to top the qualification round. Julian Weber of Germany was third with a throw of 85.37m.
The final of the men's javelin throw will be held on Sunday at 1:50 PM IST. Chopra will be looking to improve on his silver medal-winning performance from the 2022 World Championships in Oregon.
